Volunteer

The New Haven Land Trust depends on the commitment of regular volunteers to assist us in managing our preserves and community gardens. Restoring habitat and working in a community garden benefits nature and nurtures community relationships. We welcome and thank you for your time and dedication.

Garden projects consist of planting seeds, weeding, spreading mulch and compost, fence building and minor landscaping. Preserve projects range from trash cleanup, bridge building & restoration, trail clearing & construction and invasive plant removal.

We have opportunities for educators to teach garden workshops or lead nature walks. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please review our listed opportunities and contact:Volunteer@newhavenlandtrust.org.

Opportunities

Nature Preserve Projects:

Invasive Plant Removal:  This activity is seasonal, generally from June through October.  Typically you will be cutting woody plants (trees, shrubs or vines) and treating the cut with glyphosate.  This is a closely supervised activity and instruction is provided on site.We are also seeking preserve stewards, who after training, would work independently or in groups controling invasive plants.

Wood Removal:  Salt marsh restoration work is ongoing at the Long Wharf Nature Preserve to remove wood debris.  We can accommodate a group of 10-100 volunteers to help with this project. Supervision will be provided.

Trash Removal:  Removal of trash that accumulates during storms or needless dumping is also an ongoing and much needed task for volunteers. Please contact us to help keep these treasured preserved greenspaces beautiful. We can accommodate individuals or groups of 10-100 volunteers to help with this project. Supervision will be provided.
